karary University and Sudan University sign Two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) - (09/Jan/2023)

The Ministry of Defense, represented by the National Authority for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, signed two separate cooperation memoranda with the Sudan University of Science and Technology and Karary University.

The signing ceremony was attended, on behalf of Sudan University, by Prof. Awadallah Tayfour Ali (vice chancellor), Prof. Ahmed Al-Sadiq Saeed (member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the university's representative to the National Authority), and Dr. Mariam Abbas Ibrahim (director of external relations).

On behalf of Karary University, it was attended by Major Engineer Mudathir Abdel Malik Mohammed Abdullah, Secretary to the University Director.

The agreements were signed by:

    • Colonel (Staff) Dr. Eng. Khalid Mohammed Osman Mohammed, Director General of the National Authority for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (on behalf of the Ministry of Defense)
    • Prof. Issa Bashir Mohammed Al-Tayeb, Director of Sudan University of Science and Technology
    • Prof. Ahmed Abkar Yahya Mohammed, Director of Karary University

The agreements aim to enhance capacity building, awareness programs, professional ethics, and the development of chemical laboratories, as well as to support advanced activities and efforts toward establishing a National Center for Chemical Safety and Security, while promoting coordination and cooperation in all relevant procedures.

The parties also agreed to:

    • Develop a unified manual for the management of chemical materials
    • Support the expansion of the Sudanese Chemical Society’s activities.
    • Promote community awareness
    • Establish a chemical safety and security system
    • Strengthen cooperation and coordination in media-related activities

In a statement to SUNA following the signing, Lt. Gen. Essam Mohammed Hassan Karrar, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Defense, noted that the agreements would open broad avenues for cooperation between the National Authority and both universities in combating chemical weapons and weapons of mass destruction, benefiting Sudan and neighboring countries.

Prof. Issa Bashir Mohammed Al-Tayeb praised the “smart partnership” between the university and the Authority, highlighting ongoing collaboration in academic fields such as chemistry, pharmacy, agriculture, medicine, chemical engineering, and petroleum engineering. He also noted that university specialists have received advanced training courses abroad ranging from one week to a month.

Prof. Ahmed Abkar Yahya, Director of Karary University, emphasized the importance of the agreement in strengthening the capacities of university staff and enhancing cooperation and coordination with the National Authority for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
